Minister Van der Hoeven about Flood Control 2015

On June 24th, the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Maria van der Hoeven, gave a keynote speech on innovation, and more specifically on the results of three years of public-private partnership for innovation in key areas for a thriving, sustainable Dutch society. And the results are good; many innovations have been realised and, perhaps more importantly, many active interdisciplinary networks have been formed. The current strategic innovation agendas will continue up to 2013, and new funding has been approved. Flood Control 2015 was named as an example of succesful innovation with high societal impact.  Read more...

New framework to work towards more accurate flood forecasts

No matter if you are a civilian or a flood manager, you need accurate information at the earliest moment in order to adequately prepare for a flood. Preferably days before the flood actually occurs. But as anybody knows who has ever been caught off guard by a rainstorm, weather forecasts can be inaccurate. The same is true for the models that predict where the rain will end up and how it will affect flood levels. Researchers in the Flood Control program are developing different methods to increase the accuracy of these forecasts. They are developed alongside a common framework for uncertainty reduction in operational flood forecasting systems.  Read more...

Serious Game helps citizens prepare for disasters

In case of a disaster, first responders will not be able to help everybody. Citizens will, therefore, have to improve their ability to help themselves, to be able to take care of themselves and of those around them. In a recent project, Hester Stubbé studied the way in which Serious Gaming can help citizens to increase their preparedness for disasters. A pilot game showed such good results that a full version is now under development.  Read more...

Can smart levees protect the Sacramento Delta?

Dikes and levees are used in many areas around the world for flood protection. But in the Sacramento Delta in California, USA, they have an additional use: without the dikes the supply and the quality of the drinking water would be endangered. Current dikes give protection for the 100 year flood. Upgrades are being prepared, but will take many years to complete. Two students of the University of California, Berkeley investigated the possible application of smart sensor systems to prevent catastrophic damages due to unexpected levee failure.  Read more...

A Flood Control Dashboard for Jakarta

Jurjen Wagemaker has been a part of Flood Control 2015 since the very beginning. Recently he moved to Jakarta as a representative of HKV in South East Asia. For Flood Control 2015 this is another great opportunity to gauge the international interest in our innovative approaches. His conclusion: Indonesia is ready for a modern approach to operational flood information systems. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Indonesia uses the Flood Control Dashboard even before we do in The Netherlands”.  Read more...

Satellites used succesfully for rapid flood mapping

A lack of information significantly hampers the crisis management efforts. The Rapid Flood Mapping project has been studying the feasibility of building an operational system that uses satellite data for quick and continuous mapping of flood prone areas. Project manager Rogier Westerhoff explains: "Such a system could be very useful to water managers as it enables them to make more accurate flood forecasts and therefore more timely measures can be taken."  Read more...
